Starting January 17, 2019, we began redirecting traffic from Intellicast.com to wunderground.com. Even though the Intellicast name and website will be going away, the technology and features that you have come to rely on will continue to live on wunderground.com.

The WSR-88D is one of the most powerful and advanced Weather Surveillance Doppler Radar in the world. Since first being built and tested in 1988, it has been installed and used operationally at over 160 locations across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Essentially, those lines on radar just show that air in the atmosphere is trying to move up, but something is preventing it from rising so far up that it could develop into showers and storms.

Doppler weather radars are remote sensing instruments and are capable of detecting particle type (rain, snow, hail, insects, etc), intensity, and motion. Radar data can be used to determine the structure of storms and to help with predicting severity of storms.

Therefore, if the precipitation is restricted to very low levels, especially within a few hundred feet from the ground, the radar beam might overshoot it, leading to undetected rainfall.
