Aether

On the wiki it reads:

Upon placing 300 or more tiles of Shimmer in the Underground or Cavern layers, an Aether biome is created. In an Aether, the area gets dimmer and stars appear in the background. The music that plays is "Aether" and the background can be replicated using the Aether Monolith.

However a friend and I made a pool of shimmer 'Underground' and it didn't change the background.. We could place a monolith but were hoping we didn't have to.. Either the wiki is wrong or we didn't include enough buffer room, but what are the exact circ*mstances needed then? We could rebuild it in another location pretty easily but we'd like to know the exact specifications required or if it's even possible anymore, thanks.

Why won't you use the Monolith? Seens like a waste of effort trying to recreate the Biome without it.

I thought the text "an Aether biome is created" implied it'd just have the monolith effect, that's the only reason. We can easily make a monolith I was just curious if it's possible to make the effect without it I guess? Also it's really not that hard to make an area like this, we have the containment unit and the hand of creation.

Oh ok. Are you sure you have enough tiles? I reccomend you dump some more shimmer.

PC - [Spoilers!!!] How to make an (un)natural ****** biome area without a monolith? (4) Yeah there's a lot.. honestly I have no idea 'why' like I could theorize all day and I guess we could try to fill it a bit more sometime today but this is definitely 450+ (we fish a lot and I know what 300 looks like). So that's why I was confused, the wiki just says fill with 300 and put it underground - so I was wondering if I could get insight into the actual exact specifications like did it have to be X units under 'Underground' or something that we missed. But yea.

Maybe the range for the biome is really small? Or maybe you're not actually in the Underground for some reason? Maybe there's another biome that's overriding the Aether?

Above is normal forest, though it is pretty close to the dungeon entrance, but you can see from the screenshot it's underground (20'). Flying over doesn't show the biome effect... like you said we can just drop a monolith I was just trying to avoid that and figure it out PC - [Spoilers!!!] How to make an (un)natural ****** biome area without a monolith? I say you try and build the lake depper and further away from the dungeon.

Definitely try building it at Cavern layer. The biome is naturally generated deep below the surface of the world, so it likely won't produce all its effects unless also deep underground.

If memory serves correctly, Shimmer biomes can't be created on the surface or underground without the aid of a monolith.

Edit: Confirmed that the Aether biome cannot be created on or close to the surface through the use of Shimmer. You need to use an Aether Monolith for the effect.

Ah, ok... idk why it says that on the wiki then. I might try to open it with TEdit to see if I can just Biome Morph it or not..

Wait you said on or close to surface though but ours is "20' Underground" so is it possible to make an artificial one at all if it were lowered or are you saying it's not possible at all? I was honestly hoping there was like someone who datamined the actual mechanics over speculation, but yeah. The only reason we made ours at all was because we made a new map that had a natural one and we read on the wiki we could create one with ~300 shimmer liquids Underground, so we did that, so either that wiki entry was wrong or we did something wrong but if we did - it's simply because the wiki doesn't have enough information on how to do that yet which is fine.

Edit: It's not possible to biome morph to Aether just yet via TEdit D: welp yea.. monolith it is ig.

It is possible to make an Aether biome using Shimmer when deep enough underground. The Cavern layer should be deep enough, but it may work in the Underground layer too. I have not personally tried it, so I do not know the exact depth the Aether effect can occur.

Ok ty for clarifying at least, I'll try to move it lower and away from the dungeon.

Edit: Worked ^^
