About T. Kingfisher

As the pen-name of the American novelist Ursula Vernon, the pseudonym T. Kingfisher has come to be synonymous with a certain style of fantasy and horror. Infusing the two together, she largely writes for adults under this moniker, delivering stories that really are rich and imaginative. When using her own name she mostly focuses on children’s literature, but the Kingfisher brand is primarily aimed at the older reader. Showing herself to be a highly versatile and gifted author too, she really understands what it is that she wants from the writing as well, making it work for her.

Many of the worlds she creates are well established, really coming to live off the page, as the bring the reader in to a somewhat alien landscape. This has seen her become a huge household name over the years, reaching numerous readers from around the world with her work. Setting herself apart from other writers within her field, she really pushes her art-form to the limit, finding something new in the process. This has allowed her to create a voice that really is very much her own, letting the work essentially speak for itself in a sense.

Often combining fantasy and horror to thrilling effect, she speaks to readers from all over the world, with her work being accessible to readers from a wide-range of different backgrounds. She’s also written short-story collections under this name too, really allowing it to explore a number of different avenues. The characters themselves are also very well drawn, as they feel wholly real, resonating in a manner quite unlike any other currently out there. She also has a lot more to come still, as she will carry on writing for a long time to come, with plenty more novels planned upon the horizon.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up with a keen interest in writing and literature, Ursula Vernon was extremely interested in books from an early age. As an artist’s daughter herself, she would grow up surrounded by creativity, something that would heavily inspire her. This would develop over the years, as she would also go on to pursue a career in science, before settling down as a novelist.

Born on the 28th of May in 1977, she was born in Japan, before growing up in Oregon, America, followed by Arizona. Studying at Macalester College based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, she would study anthropology there, all the while taking art classes. Currently living with her husband Kevin Sonney, the two of them podcast together, as she continues to write on a regular basis.

Writing Career

Starting out as an illustrator, Ursula Vernon would pursue a career in art, before combining this with her own writing. In 2004 she would publish a collection of her sketches in a book titled ‘It Made Sense at the Time’ which brought them altogether. She would then go on to write children’s novels, starting with ‘Digger’ back in 2004, and would later write her first novella under the name of T. Kingfisher in 2013 titled ‘Nine Goblins.’

Finding her own voice, she has explored a whole variety of different style within and throughout her work as an author. Taking in inspiration from the world around her, she would build upon this, putting everything back into her fiction and writing. Winning numerous awards over the course of her literary career, including the much coveted Hugo, along with the Nebula, she has a lot more to come still.

The Wonder Engine

This was originally brought out through Vernon’s own ‘Red Wombat Studio’ publishing imprint, released in 2018 on the 27th of February. Marking the second title in the ‘Clocktaur War’ series of novels, this would carry on from the first with another story set in the same world. Working as a fantasy novel largely aimed at an adult demographic, it would bring to life the world once more in full color. The previous title was ‘Clockwork Boys,’ and that would first come out back in 2017, as it would also make some impact upon its release.

Only just getting out of prison, a ruthless heartless assassin, a convicted forger, and an otherwise disgraced paladin have been pulled out of their incarceration. Brenner, Slate, and Caliban have been given weapons now, as they’re also provided with a target, and then pointed in the enemies direction. Heading into Anuket City, they are seeking the whereabouts of the Clockwork Boys, finding plenty of secrets along the way. Will they be able to find what they’re looking for? Can they locate the enemy? What will find with the wonder engine?

Paladin’s Strength

Initially released in 2021, this would first come out on the 28th of February to much acclaim, as it would mark the 2nd title in ‘The Saint of Steel’ series. The first one, ‘Paladin’s Grace,’ would come out the previous year in 2020, with this providing another story set in the same world. There’s a lot her for fans to invest themselves in, as it seeks to further develop everything that came before, and take it up a level in this fantasy series.

This really follows up on the promise of the first novel, really making the most of the world and its inhabitants within. The characters really speak to the reader, as it takes them to new and exciting places, fully pushing them all to the limit. There’s plenty of action and adventure, with a lot of imagination and excitement driving it forwards in the process too.

Heading across a continent in pursuit of a dangerous supernatural killer, Istvhan is the paladin of a now dead god. Then there’s Clara who herself is out to find the raiders who previously kidnapped her sisters and burnt down her convent, as she comes from a secretive order. Meeting each other their path’s collide, as they find themselves banding together, heading into the heart of a corrupt city. Can they deal with the living and the dead? What is Clara’s secret that threatens to break the trust between them? Will they find the paladin’s strength?
